Salon to Soil: Where Grooming Waste Is Reused

At Ruff Retreat, we take responsibility for what happens after the groom — not just during it. Through our Salon to Soil partnership, dog hair collected in our salon is reused rather than sent to landfill.

We work with the Green Groomers Collective to ensure clean, untreated dog hair collected in our salon is reused through established recycling and composting processes.

What Is Salon to Soil?

Every time your dog visits us for a pamper session, we collect the clean, untreated hair left behind. Instead of being disposed of as waste, it is separated, bagged, and sent for reuse.

That hair is then sent to the Green Groomers Collective, where it’s:

Reused in textile and material development projects where appropriate

Composted into nutrient-rich soil enhancers

Diverted from landfill through reuse or composting

It’s a small operational change that reduces waste from our grooming service.

Why Dog Hair?

Naturally biodegradable

Readily available as a by-product of routine grooming

Suitable for reuse or composting when untreated.

It’s a by-product of regular grooming that can be put to practical use rather than discarded.

Why It Matters

A significant volume of pet grooming waste is routinely sent to landfill each year, despite having potential secondary uses. Through our Salon to Soil initiative, Ruff Retreat participates in a waste-reduction initiative that offers an alternative to landfill disposal.

Supports circular economy principles

Contributes to the UK’s sustainable textile and soil health movement

Gives back to the earth, naturally

You won’t see your dog’s haircut go to waste. You’ll see it reused responsibly, rather than treated as waste.
